I dont have a head section in the index.php file i only have it in the index.html file

Can someone help me please - no background showing in sub menu

yes, you need to add that snippet into the head area of your site template.

I edited the file in /public_html/joomla2/templates/community-one/index.php

Would it matter if I have any other extensions installed?

Please let me know what to do next - basically I dont have a background on the sub menus.
