I'm not sure if I cought you right, but probably this is not transparency problem. It depends on settings in template css file. (template_css.css). There is a section f.eg. #silver_menu (depends on menu you are trying to expand) in which "overflow:hidden" should be deleted or commented. See here for Georg's answer.
